John Cena to Defend US Championship at WWE Hell in a Cell 2015 in Open Challenge

Joseph ZuckerOct 19, 2015

John Cena is taking his WWE United States Championship open challenge to Hell in a Cell on Sunday, per PWMania.com.

By putting the open challenge on a pay-per-view, WWE looks to be tipping its hand as to the future of the U.S. Championship. Plus, WrestleZone.com's Jonathan Jansen cited a report from PWInsider.com that stated Cena is taking a break from WWE television after Hell in a Cell.

The History of WWE foresees a title change no matter who ends up fighting Cena:

Although Cena dropped the U.S. title to Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, the natural end game for Cena's open challenge is either a midcard Superstar or recent NXT call-up beating Cena for the belt. Whoever beats the 15-time world champion will earn instant credibility among WWE fans—like when The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 6 but on a lesser scale.

An established name such as Rollins, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt or Dean Ambrose would gain less from a win over Cena than Cesaro, Tyler Breeze, Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe, Bad News Barrett, Stardust, Big E or Neville would, to name a few.

For Cena, an extended vacation—should he take one—would serve two purposes. He could recover from the physical toll of his grueling road schedule, and his absence would add more excitement to his eventual return—likely sometime around the Royal Rumble to build for WrestleMania season.
