Former Ajax Coach Likens Memphis Depay to 'Peruvian Pan Flute Player'

Ryan BaileyJun 8, 2018

Memphis Depay was nothing short of a sensation in the Eredivisie last season, but the Dutchman has so far failed to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

In the wake of the Netherlands' failure to reach Euro 2016, the Manchester United star has been criticised by former Twente coach Co Adriaanse for conveying an arrogance that belies his achievements. Speaking to Studio Voetbal, the 68-year-old said (via Goal.com):

"

He needs to be corrected. He must realise that he is a member in a football team, that he is not just an individual, a 100 metre sprinter like Usain Bolt.

"

Adriaanse then went on to criticise the outfit Depay wore at the Dutch training camp prior to the national team's Euro qualification loss to Iceland:

"

He arrived as a Peruvian pan flute player at [Netherlands team hotel] Huis ter Duin. If you are a young boy and still have not done anything, do not play dress up as you report to the coach. [Cristiano] Ronaldo does that, but at least he is proven.

He does not even talk to the press, which he ignores. That cannot be the way. He represents us, the Dutch people. And we want to know what he thinks. He should always speak to them, and must be corrected.

"

The 68-year-old isn't the first Dutch football personality to ridicule Depay's wardrobe choice, as legendary former player and manager Willem van Hanegem, writing in Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Goal.com), compared him to an Amish person last month.
