California High School Team Stuns Opponent with Walk-Off Hail Mary

Kyle NewportJun 6, 2018

Just when it looked like Thursday's game between California's Harvard-Westlake (Los Angeles) Wolverines and St. Francis (La Canada) Golden Knights was headed to overtime, the Wolverines found a way to make Golden Knights players hold their heads in disbelief with the final play of regulation.

With the score tied 21-21, Harvard-Westlake had the ball at the St. Francis 47-yard line with 1.3 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The only thing the Wolverines had time for was a Hail Mary.

Their prayers ended up being answered.

Harvard-Westlake quarterback Noah Rothman gave his receivers a chance to make a play by getting the ball near the goal line, and when the ball was tipped up in the air, Wolverines receiver Alex Barnum was in the right place at the right time. Somehow, that's how he imagined catching a Hail Mary.

Barnum explained what he was thinking on the final play to Keith Lair of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune:

"

It was definitely a dream. You always see the Hail Mary off the tip. I knew. ... He threw it up and I was going to the back (of the end zone) and it came straight to me. We did not design that all. I figured I would let them to try and catch it and if it tipped up, I was going go get it.

"

The ball did end up being tipped, and Barnum's positioning couldn't have been better.

There was no need for the extra-point attempt, so the walk-off Hail Mary gave Harvard-Westlake a 27-21 victory.
