Bengals to Rely on Rookie LB Until Burfict and Rey Return

Sunday, Oct. 18

The Bengals announced Rey is questionable to return to the game with a right ankle injury. According to Around the NFL, Cincinnati's medical staff took extra precautions and carted him back to the locker room.

The impact of Rey's absence—should he miss a long stretch of games—would be blunted should Burfict be healthy for the Bengals' next game. They have a bye in Week 7 and then get the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 1, the earliest point at which Burfict could come off the physically unable to perform list.

Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported head coach Marvin Lewis won't activate Burfict during the bye week, but he could be healthy enough to practice the week of the Steelers game.

Until then, Cincinnati will hope P.J. Dawson can serve as an adequate replacement for Rey. Considering how well Rey played in 2014, asking Dawson to immediately deliver the same kind of production would be unfair. But he could be a nice stopgap for the short term until either Rey or Burfict is ready to step back into the lineup.
