Arizona State vs. Utah: Live Score and Highlights
Utah 34, Arizona State 18, Final
Utah trailed late in this game, but some key defensive stops helped the Utes pull away for a 34-18 win over Arizona State.
The final score may not reflect it, but this was the kind of game that gets defensive coordinators excited. Both defensive units played well and came up with big stops, but it was ultimately Utah that had more to offer on the offensive side of things.
Utah quarterback Travis Wilson played arguably his best game, throwing for 297 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-36 passing. He was not particularly flashy, but he did not throw an interception and kept the offense going on a night in which running back Devontae Booker struggled.
His final stat line--118 yards and two touchdowns--will keep him in the Heisman conversation, but it was two big run plays that padded the stat book for Booker. He had touchdown runs of 25 and 62 yards in the fourth quarter. Arizona State kept him in check for most of the night, and he often had little running room.
Arizona State never really got into a good offensive rhythm, rushing for only 15 yards on 28 carries, but it was the special teams unit that almost got the Sun Devils out of Rice-Eccles Stadium with a win.
Tim White took a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown early in the game to tie things up at seven, and Gump Hayes set Arizona State up well on another drive with a 48-yard punt return. There was also another big play on special teams, but it was more stupidity on Utah's part than anything.
After receiving the kickoff in the end zone almost nine yards, Utah attempted to throw the ball across the field to catch the kickoff team off guard. The dropped lateral resulted in a safety for Utah, and it was a play that looked like it might get Arizona State going. The Sun Devils were able to get a field goal off the next drive, but that would be the last points of the evening for them.
This win was huge for Utah, as it sets them up to run the table in the Pac-12 South. The Utes now have a 2-game lead as they get ready to face Southern Cal next week. Most importantly, the win kept Utah undefeated, and at 6-0, Kyle Whittingham's group will stay in the College Football Playoff discussion.
For Arizona State, this loss drops it to 4-3, and the Sun Devils have to get ready to face Oregon next.
