Gardner Works Out As WR for Miami Dolphins
Thursday, Oct. 15
Adam Caplan of ESPN reported the Miami Dolphins brought Gardner in for a tryout. The team's level of interest in signing him to a contract isn't immediately clear, though.
He previously spent time with both the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers after going undrafted this spring. While he failed to latch on with either team, he still has confidence in his ability if given a more comprehensive opportunity, per Will Graves of the Associated Press.
"I feel like football all over the field is football," Gardner said. "No matter where I play I feel I'm going to do well as long as I learn how to play it."
On the surface, the Dolphins don't seem like an ideal fit for a player looking for as many practice reps as possible. He'd be no better than sixth in the receiver pecking order behind Jarvis Landry, Greg Jennings, Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker and Rishard Matthews.
Gardner did show off his athleticism over his final two years at Michigan. He racked up over 4,800 yards passing and nearly 750 yards rushing during that stretch. But translating that into NFL success has proved to be difficult.
As a free agent, he can't be picky when it comes to workouts, but he'd be buried on the depth chart in Miami. Ideally, he'd land with a team with a less crowded receiving corps, where he'd get some consistent practice reps and potentially some special teams work while he gains more polish on offense.
Gardner certainly possesses some upside, and his willingness to change positions is a positive. Now he just needs to find a team that's going to give him an extensive look and the necessary coaching.
