Deiondre Porter Suspended: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction on Florida DB

Tim DanielsOct 14, 2015

Florida freshman defensive back Deiondre Porter was suspended indefinitely Wednesday morning after being arrested in Alachua County, Florida, which encompasses Gainesville.

Gators Football confirmed the suspension. Landon Watnick of Rivals reports Porter is facing five charges, including aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel reported Porter was arrested for "firing a gun in the direction of his pregnant girlfriend on Sept. 29."

Mark Long of the Associated Press provided the special team contributor's mugshot:

Brett McMurphy of ESPN provided additional details about the charges:

Florida head coach Jim McElwain admonished Porter's actions, as noted by Bleacher Report's Barrett Sallee.

"His choice, not to be with us. It's one of those things we don't condone," McElwain said.

Porter, a star quarterback in high school, sat out last season as a redshirt. He was thrust into a mostly special teams role this season while also providing depth in the defensive backfield. He registered two total tackles through four games.

While further information about the incident that led to Porter's arrest isn't yet available, the Gators made the right decision to suspend him immediately, likely until the situation is resolved.

Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times notes four of the five charges against him are felonies.

He wasn't playing a major role for Florida, so there shouldn't be a serious drop off due to his absence. The Gators will probably use a committee of players to fill the void on special teams while they await more details about Porter's status.
