Why the Redskins can cover the spread
Washington has continued to play hard under second-year head coach Jay Gruden, knowing that he could be fired at the end of the season if the team disappoints again. The Redskins are coming off a tough defeat at Atlanta after playing a solid game on both sides of the ball, and they have now covered the spread in three of their last four.
The difference in the game was the interception thrown by Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins in overtime that was returned for a touchdown by the Falcons defense. Cousins threw two picks for the third time this season to bring his total to six, although the good news is that he has alternated games without throwing one in the other two, which have both resulted in wins. In other words, if Cousins plays well, his team has a chance.
Why the Jets can cover the spread
The Jets are looking to pick up where they left off before their bye, with their most recent game resulting in a 27-14 victory in London against the Miami Dolphins. They dominated the Dolphins to the point that Miami head coach Joe Philbin ended up getting fired and they covered the spread for the sixth time in their last seven games overall.
New York running back Chris Ivory also continues to take pressure off quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, which is exactly what the offense needs to succeed. Ivory rushed for a season-high 166 yards on 29 carries versus the Dolphins and scored a touchdown. He had 148 yards on 34 carries combined in the previous two games he played this year.
Smart pick
Defensively, the Jets are just too good to not get Cousins to turn the ball over at least once. It would not be surprising at all if he had multiple interceptions again, either, playing against one of the NFL’s top secondaries. For that reason, back New York to cover.
Betting trends
The Jets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games.
The Redskins are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as road underdogs in October.
The total has gone under in 15 of the Jets' last 18 games after the bye.
