Tuttle Out for Season Due to Injuries

Tuesday, Oct. 13

“That’s a big, big blow to our football team,” head coach Butch Jones said at his press conference on Tuesday, per Dustin Dopirak of KnoxNews.com.

"I love Shy and the way he has developed," he added before discussing the competition for the rest of the spots at that position.

"It will be ongoing to see who can step up into that fifth defensive tackle spot," Jones noted. "This week is very big for Quay [Picou] to see if he can develop."

Replacing the true freshman won't be easy. Tuttle had established himself as a disruptive presence in the last four games, solidifying the middle of the Volunteers' defensive line. Losing him is a major concern for a defense that was already allowing 170.5 rushing yards per game, 75th in the nation.

His running mate, Kahlil McKenzie, will need to step up in a big way without Tuttle in the lineup. Tennessee's defense has already struggled to this point, especially with defensive end Curt Maggitt out with an injury of his own, so losing Tuttle is another big blow for one of the shakier defenses in the SEC.
