Second seed Roger Federer crashed out in his opening match of the 2015 Shanghai Masters on Tuesday as he was beaten by Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets in the second round.

However, Ramos-Vinolas stepped up his play in the third set to pull off a huge upset in the performance of his career.
Milos Raonic qualified through to the second round with a straight-sets victory over Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci, but he was made to work hard in a 98-minute encounter.

Federer Unable to Turn Tide Against Ramos-Vinolas

The defending champion Federer did not make the best of starts to his 2015 campaign in Shanghai. While he was far from poor, he was not at his best in the opening set of his second-round match against Ramos-Vinolas.
The world No. 70 took advantage, saving two break points and forcing a tiebreak, which he then won 7-4 to take a surprise lead.
It was more of the same early in the second set with the 27-year-old Ramos-Vinolas looking unflappable as he held serve with remarkable composure.
However, Federer, as expected, finally turned the momentum as he broke for 3-2 in the second set with a well-worked overhead smash.
Per Sky Sports' Peter Fleming (via BBC 5 Live's David Law), Federer was in fantastic form at the net, and he proved as much when breaking again for 5-2 and then sealing the second set with impressive defence:
From there, the match looked to be going only one way. But Ramos-Vinolas produced some impeccable tennis in the decider and broke for 5-3 to be serving for the set.
He attempted a huge first serve on his first match point but sent it just wide; however, Federer then put the second serve long to hand Ramos-Vinolas the most unlikely of victories.
World No. 9 Raonic came through in his clash against Bellucci in two sets, but he needed a pair of tiebreak triumphs to seal the win.
The Canadian and Bellucci exchanged breaks in the opener before Raonic emerged victorious in the breaker, 7-5.
The second set was a very tight affair, with the Brazilian saving the only break point offered up by either player.
However, Raonic finished things off with ease in the second-set tiebreak, which he took 7-2. TennisTV provided the full stats from the match:
France's Richard Gasquet, the 11th seed, also came through in straight sets. He took the first-set tiebreak 7-4 against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller before breaking twice to win the second set 6-2; he moves into the second round.
Wednesday is a packed and star-filled schedule as Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal all get their campaigns under way in Shanghai.
