McCown Active for Week 8

Sunday, Nov. 1

Andrew Gribble of the team's official site announced that McCown was not among the inactive players against the Arizona Cardinals.

Latest on McCown's Practice Status Ahead of Week 8

Friday, Oct. 30

Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer reported McCown was practicing for the second straight day.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network added that Manziel was receiving reps with the starters in Thursday's practice.

McCown Comments on Injury

Monday, Oct. 26

"I'll be all right," McCown said after the game, per Cabot. "I'm not going to comment anymore on [the shoulder]. We'll see how it goes. It's obviously sore right now."

McCown also discussed how he suffered the injury.

"Yeah, I was throwing the ball and I thought it was a pass but the guy hit my elbow and I just felt it, felt something in the back of my shoulder," McCown said.

Further Injury Could Result in QB Controversy

If the veteran signal-caller misses further time this season, the Browns and their fans will get another chance to see what they have in Manziel. Many were calling for Manziel to start after he guided Cleveland to a Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans while McCown sat out with a concussion.

McCown got his job back upon returning from that injury and threw for an average of over 384 yards per game in his next three starts. He did suffer an ankle injury in Week 5 but still played against the Denver Broncos in Week 6.

There's little doubt McCown can execute coordinator John DeFilippo's system at a high level, utilizing every option at his disposal in spite of the Browns' limited receiving corps. Manziel will have to prove he can do the same for Cleveland's offense to succeed.

Although he's not as experienced as McCown and may make coaches anxious by straying from structure more often, Manziel does have excellent downfield accuracy and can ignite the Browns with big, improvised plays. They will hope that will be enough to hold the fort down whenever McCown is absent.
