What Alabama Fans Need to Know About New 2017 QB Commit Jake Fromm

Alabama added another promising passer to its impressive stockpile of young quarterbacks Saturday, gaining a commitment from 4-star Georgia prospect Jake Fromm during his latest campus visit.

He shared the decision with head coach Nick Saban prior to a Crimson Tide victory over Arkansas, confirming his choice on social media shortly afterward:

Fromm, a 6'3", 220-pound junior at Houston County High School in Warner Robins, Georgia, fielded scholarship offers from more than a dozen college programs. His list of options includes Ole Miss, Miami, South Carolina, Kentucky and Michigan State.

Rated ninth nationally among pro-style quarterbacks in 2017 composite class rankings, Fromm is a paramount pickup for Alabama. He joins a collection of eight Crimson Tide pledges that already features 5-star running back Najee Harris, dynamic Mississippi wide receiver D.D. Bowie and top-rated Peach State offensive lineman Netori Johnson

Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin continues to collect assets for future attacks. His latest pickup may ultimately prove most important.

Fromm figures to assume the role of ringleader as Alabama's 2017 recruiting efforts move forward. He expressed plans to help construct another strong Crimson Tide class that can contend for future national championships.

“I’m shutting it down. I’m 100 percent Alabama. It’s not something that I’ll take too lightly because I want to make my class the best I can make it," Fromm told Hank South of 247Sports. "I’m ready to do it. I’m ready to take on that role.”

Aside from leadership qualities, Alabama fans can expect a competitive player on the field.

Fromm established himself as a varsity starter during his freshman campaign and continued to improve during a dominant underclassman career.

He collected 4,736 total passing yards by the end of his sophomore season, per MaxPreps, tossing 39 touchdowns in the process. His junior campaign is off to a scintillating start, as Fromm has completed 60 percent of pass attempts for 1,521 yards and 15 scores through six games.

His Houston County squad remains unbeaten midway through October, and head coach Von Lassiter heaps the praise on his star passer for early success.

"He can process information faster than anybody I've ever been around. He's a guy that's extremely intelligent," Lassiter told Drew Champlin of AL.com. "To top it off, he's a very good player. You can see how quickly he releases the ball. He's got great arm strength and great accuracy."

Fromm is fresh off his strongest performance of the fall. He completed 12 of 15 passes for 219 yards and five touchdowns in a 44-12 victory over Cross Creek High School, per MaxPreps, providing further evidence of his surgical approach at the position.

Long before Fromm rose to stardom in the recruiting spectrum, he made plenty of noise as a baseball player.

He enjoyed a successful run to the 2011 Little League World Series, per Champlin, dominating on the mound and at the plate for Warner Robins. Fromm clobbered three home runs and registered 11 strikeouts as a pitcher in the annual nationally televised tournament.

His next challenge resides in Tuscaloosa, where Alabama is likely to host heated quarterback competitions throughout coming years.

Crimson Tide true freshman Blake Barnett, a former 5-star recruit, and 2016 commit Jalen Hurts, a dual-threat Texas talent, are likely to have at least six combined years of collegiate eligibility remaining when Fromm joins the team.

Unlike Barnett and Hurts, who both flashed tremendous rushing ability in high school, Fromm fits the mold of a more prototypical pocket passer. His presence would give the Crimson Tide coaching staff a compelling collection of passers who warrant varied offensive intricacies.
