Isner, Cilic into Last 16

With none of the elite seeds beginning their tournament on Monday, there was a chance to see some of the players considered to be outsiders for the title get their competition underway.
Cilic found things tough from the off in his tie against wild card Wu. The former U.S. Open champion suffered a break of serve in the very first game of the match, and some sloppy shots saw him unable to build momentum, allowing Wu to take the opening stanza 6-4.

Still, Cilic is made of stern stuff, and after a mess of an opening set, he responded well, taking the second 6-3.
From that point on, Wu could have rolled over, but he recovered well from an early break and continued to play with aggression before a supportive local crowd—even fashioning a match point, which Cilic saved with an ace.
Eventually, the decider went to a tiebreak and Cilic's experience shone through, winning it by a 7-4 scoreline.
Earlier in the day, Isner enjoyed a routine win. Mannarino is a dangerous opponent capable of putting together spells of blistering tennis, but the American gave him absolutely nothing to feed off during this contest, romping to a lopsided 6-1, 6-2 victory.
As we can see here courtesy of ByTheMin Tennis, the 13th seed served superbly against the Frenchman, wrapping up victory in just 45 minutes:
Lopez, seeded 15th in Shanghai, is another top player who was able to progress in straight sets, getting the better of Andrey Kuznetsov.
The qualifier did battle hard in this one, taking the Spaniard deep in both sets. However, the class of Lopez saw him home, winning 6-4, 7-6 (3) to progress into the last 32.

The left-hander was magnificent when it came to the crunch in both sets, as we can see here courtesy of TennisTV:
Tsonga is also sure of a place in Round 2. The Frenchman suffered with the conditions at the China Open in Beijing last time out, losing in surprise circumstances in the opening round.
For a spell it seemed as though he was going to suffer a similar fate in Shanghai, losing the first set on a tie break to veteran Tommy Robredo.
But the early disappointment seemed to spark Tsonga into life, as he totally dominated the next couple of sets. Robredo was only able to notch another four games, as the Frenchman eventually blew him away with some shuddering groundstrokes to snatch a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2 win.

Tuesday will see a scattering of big names take to the court. Second seed and reigning champion Roger Federer will be hopeful of getting off to a strong start when he faces qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas, while Milos Raonic, Kevin Anderson and Richard Gasquet begin their respective quests for glory.
The man to beat will be Novak Djokovic, though. He will get his competition underway with a clash with Martin Klizan in Round 2 on Wednesday and comes into this tournament in tremendous form after clinching a sixth China Open crown last time out.
