The Next Important American Heavyweight?

Any time there's an American heavyweight of any distinction, he'll grab some attention from the boxing community. The overall popularity of the sport is higher when there's an American heavyweight champion. We have that in Deontay Wilder, but with more legitimate American contenders, the heavyweight scene would be even more compelling.

Washington is far from a traditional contender. He didn't turn professional until he was 30 years old. Now 33, he has been on the fast track to prominence. Of his 16 wins, 11 of them have come by knockout.

The 6'6" San Jose, California, native was forced to go the distance against Jason Gavern in his last fight back in March. In his first bout with major national exposure, Washington will want to be impressive.

Per Premier Boxing Champions, the big man is talking like a fighter who is ready to make his mark on the division. "This is my time to make a statement," he said. "I will make an example of Amir Mansour to let the heavyweight division know that there’s a new sheriff in town. No more ‘Mr. Nice Guy’—it’s time for me to bring the pain!"

Not Impressed

Washington's combination of size and power is impressive to most people—but not Mansour. He said, per PBC:

"

Gerald Washington has not even come close to fighting someone of my caliber. He has zero advantage except for height, and I’m experienced enough to take that away. The match against me is going to introduce Washington to an entirely new world of fighting, and I’m sure he isn’t prepared for this type of fight.

"

You know it's serious when a guy uses your full name. Mansour's experience advantage is apparent. He's had seven more fights and has faced better competition—which includes former world champion Steve Cunningham.

There's also no questioning Mansour's power. Take a look at this vicious one-punch KO against Fred Kassi in November 2014:

Mansour fought Gavern as well, but he dispatched the veteran in the first round back in 2013. Because he had an easier time with a common opponent, the 6'1" veteran could have even more confidence heading into the bout.

While Mansour does have an advantage when it comes to in-ring experience, the 43-year-old is at a disadvantage when it comes to age. The 10-year age gap could be an even bigger factor than the disparity in ring experience.

Can Washington continue to impress, or will the defiant veteran take him down a notch? On Tuesday night, someone will back up his words, and the other will eat them.
