France vs. Armenia: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 Friendly

Timothy RappOct 8, 2015

France were expected to dominate their international friendly against Armenia on Thursday. They didn't disappoint.

Antoine Griezmann, Yohan Cabaye and Karim Benzema (twice) all scored for Les Bleus in a strong 4-0 victory against the overmatched Armenians. France controlled the match throughout, holding 59.5 percent possession, outshooting their opponents 17-5 and earning more corners (12-4), per WhoScored.com.

The two sides traded chances early on, but it wasn't until the 35th minute that France were on the board.

A sloppy turnover from Armenia in midfield sent Griezmann off to the races down the right flank. He played a nice one-two with Benzema outside of the box and ripped a screamer between the legs of Armenia goalkeeper Gevorg Kasparov to secure the game's first goal.

It was a nice breakthrough for the Atletico Madrid man, per OptaJean on Twitter:

It was a pretty dominant first half for France, as they controlled 63 percent possession and held the advantage in shots taken (8-4), shots on goal (3-0) and corners (5-1).

And it took the French all of nine minutes in the second half to double their lead.

Mathieu Valbuena did well down the left flank to create some space for himself before peeling back a pass to the top of the box. Cabaye was waiting, using a defender as a screen as he curled an unstoppable shot just inside the right post to give France the 2-0 lead.

Benzema, who had been a threat throughout, put the cherry on top of the performance with two goals in a minute down the stretch.

His first came in the 77th minute off a corner, as he headed home the game's third goal for France. His second came moments later, as Anthony Martial's through ball sent Benzema alone on goal, and he got Kasparov to ground with a fake shot before scooping his effort into the back of the net.

After scoring just one goal in his previous 12 international matches, Benzema's scoring outbreak was a welcome sign for France. The country will be hoping the star forward has rediscovered his scoring touch for the national team.

There was a slight concern for the player after his two goals, however, per Jonathan Johnson of ESPN FC:

"Benzema has felt some great discomfort behind the thigh, [that's why] we take him off straight away," French manager Didier Deschamps said after the match, per Soccerway. "I hope that it is nothing serious but we don't know yet."

France are already without Paul Pogba for their upcoming friendly against Denmark, per ESPN FC, so losing Benzema for that match would leave them without two of their biggest stars. Olivier Giroud would likely replace Benzema in that contest if the Real Madrid star was unable to play.

These are important matches for France, who haven't had to go through qualifying for the UEFA European Championships 2016 since the host nation automatically qualifies. Thus, these friendlies give the team the opportunity to tweak the lineup and tactics.

On Thursday, the French certainly looked like a team that had everything working, albeit against a weaker opponent.

Armenia next faces Albania in European qualifying, meanwhile. They currently have just two points after seven matches in Group I and are well out of the running for next year's Euros.
