Former WWE Writer Chris DeJoseph Talks Lucha Underground Season 2 and More

Donald WoodOct 8, 2015

Lucha Underground has helped revolutionize the sport of wrestling over the last year, and one of the driving forces behind the successes of the company is co-executive producer Chris DeJoseph.

DeJoseph sharpened his teeth in the industry by writing for the WWE Creative Team from 2004-2010, but he has taken his game to another level by producing some of the most entertaining and original content on television.

DeJoseph recently spoke with Ring Rust Radio (quotes courtesy of the News of Delaware County's Joe Arcidiacono) about the second season of Lucha Underground, the interest level in possibly signing former WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio, the creative process, the dirtsheets and much more.

Lucha Underground officially announced in late September that the company would be returning for a second season of the weekly television series in early 2016, with taping scheduled to begin in late 2015.

When asked about when the tapings will officially begin and what other details he could share, DeJoseph was secretive, but let out a few tidbits to get the fans excited:

"

I think it’s already out there that we are beginning taping on November 14th, if it isn’t, it is now. You will see a lot of the same characters, but you will also see some new ones. We teased a few at the end of last season; hopefully there will be a little injection of new. You always need that to be successful with any show, but especially in wrestling it’s nice to see new faces and new matchups. As far as the other stuff, I don’t want to give anything away to spoil it for anybody. I will keep my lips sealed as far as everything else and what’s happening.

"

Another major topic of conversation for supporters of Lucha Underground has been which new faces will be introduced this season. While many names have been thrown around, one that has been tossed about more than the rest is former WWE world champion Rey Mysterio.

Mysterio has spoke glowingly about what Lucha Underground is doing, and when asked about possibly bringing in a lucha legend, DeJoseph sounded like the company would be open to such a move:

"

If Rey was in Lucha Underground at all that would be amazing. What can you say about that guy? He is a former world champion and probably one of the most popular Luchadores ever. That would be amazing. As far as other new talent, that’s something that we are still in the process of. I think we would like to keep it a surprise for people. I will tell you there are some new characters, new faces, and some recognizable ones you will see.

"

The excitement surrounding Lucha Underground is building with every passing day, but DeJoseph also had a long stint in the WWE Creative room as well. With self-proclaimed wrestling insiders reportedly getting information from writers on the inside, DeJoseph addressed the leaks and his thoughts on where the rumors really originate:

"

I think when I was there, there were suspicions of some people who were, but you never really could prove it though. I never had a relationship with anyone who wrote any dirtsheet. I was too scared probably to even think about that there, especially in my beginning times. There, your life is so sheltered, but I think some come from talent, not so much creative. I am not really sure on that, but I know I never did. Sometimes things would get out that were true, but the majority of the times things that are reported are completely false or they don’t have all the information.

"

After a first season that consisted of some of the most unique and interesting storylines in wrestling history, fans are excited to see what DeJoseph and the rest of the writers have in store for Lucha Underground’s second season.

Fans have fallen in love with the revolutionary brand, and as long as the creators stay true to their craft, there is no doubt that Season 2 will be a major success. Now we just have to sit back and wait patiently.

Easier said than done.
