White, Falcons Official Address Rumors

Monday, Oct. 12

“I haven’t heard any of that,” White said on Sunday, per D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I’m a Falcon. I’ll be a Falcon for life. I’ve dedicated everything I’ve got to this team and this organization. I’m going to continue to do that. I’m going to continue each and every week to get better, be a better football player and try to win.”

“'No!' a high-ranking team official said before Sunday’s game when asked if White was available for trade," per Ledbetter. “(We’ve) had no calls and, most importantly, he is a Falcon and an important part of this offense.”

Several Teams Reportedly Interested in Acquiring White

Sunday, Oct. 11

"According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the lifelong Falcons wideout who recently opened up about his lack of targets this year is drawing interest from at least three teams as we crawl closer to the trade deadline," relayed Conor Orr of NFL.com.

"If wide receiver Leonard Hankerson picks up his play, that could lead to White possibly being traded in the upcoming weeks, Rapoport said on NFL Network's GameDay First," Orr added.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported on Oct. 6 that "teams have some interest in Roddy White" and are "determining possible trade value should they approach [Atlanta]." He also opined the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys would be good fits for the veteran wideout, though he didn't link those teams to a pursuit of White.

White Speaks Out on Role in Falcons' Offense Ahead of Week 5

White, 33, has just eight catches for 115 yards on 17 targets through five regular-season games, clearly falling behind Julio Jones and even Leonard Hankerson in Atlanta's passing game. That's a pretty big demotion for the four-time Pro Bowler.

White expressed his displeasure with his role in the offense prior to the Falcons' victory against the Washington Redskins, per ESPN's Vaughn McClure:

For me, at the end of the day, I want to catch passes. I'm not out here just f--king around just to sit around to just block f--king people all day. It's not what I want to do. I've contributed to offenses for this franchise for the last nine, 10 years. It always bothers me when I go out and don't catch any balls in a game because it hasn't happened in so long.

"

He also acknowledged he would do his job for the team and wouldn't approach the coaching staff about getting more looks. White further noted that he was getting open on many of his routes, though he often wasn't seeing targets because Matt Ryan had gone through his progression and looked elsewhere on those plays, per the team's offensive scheme.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn, meanwhile, seemed to understand White's desire for more targets.

"You wouldn't want it any other way in terms of the mindset and the attitude," he told McClure. "I think that's probably one of the things I most respect about him—to be honest with you—it's just the way he continues to battle and go for it."

It's pretty clear the pecking order in the passing game is unlikely to change. Jones is a superstar—the offense is built around getting him the ball, so his touches won't be sacrificed for White. And Hankerson has established an excellent rapport with Ryan, while Devonta Freeman continues to be a nice option out of the backfield.     

Still, it seems unlikely White would rock the boat to that point—the Falcons are a playoff contender, and White doesn't have a Super Bowl ring—but the situation has become one worth monitoring. It's also unlikely the Falcons would trade a veteran presence like White who also serves as the team's third receiver.
