Corey Smith Injury: Updates on Ohio State WR's Leg and Recovery

Ohio State's struggling offense was dealt another blow Monday, as head coach Urban Meyer announced wide receiver Corey Smith will miss the remainder of the 2015 season with a leg injury.

Smith's Injury Leaves Buckeyes Without Another Weapon

Monday, Oct. 5

Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports passed along the news. Smith, a senior, had made five receptions for 62 yards through the first five games of 2015. He was injured during Saturday's 34-27 win over Indiana when teammate Curtis Samuel caused his leg to buckle on a running play.

"We had a tough injury to Corey Smith, who's kind of an all-purpose guy for us, a tough guy," Meyer said, per Eric Seger of Eleven Warriors. "Prayers up to him."

The Buckeyes are already without Noah Brown, who broke his leg in training camp, and were thin at the position coming into the season. Converted wide receiver Braxton Miller has made eight receptions for 113 yards this season but remains more of a threat running the football. Michael Thomas currently leads the team with 292 receiving yards, while Jalin Marshall and Samuel have helped out in secondary roles.

Losing Smith will hurt on special teams, where he's a key contributor, and will make offensive production even tougher to come by. Ohio State currently sits a shaky 33rd in yards per game despite not yet playing a ranked opponent. The Buckeyes struggled to settle on a full-time quarterback until Cardale Jones took over last week, and now they'll be dealing with yet another shift on the wide receiver depth chart.

Not a great sign for a team many were already starting to lose faith in.
