Chelsea Transfer News: Giannelli Imbula Contact Made Amid Latest Blues Rumours

Rob BlanchetteSep 30, 2015

Chelsea are tracking highly rated youngster Giannelli Imbula after the player helped Porto defeat the Blues in the Champions League.

L'Equipe (h/t Tom Olver of Metro) says the France under-21 international has failed to settle in Portugal since his £14.7 million move from Marseille in the summer, with Chelsea said to be in "constant contact" with the player's father—who is also his agent—over a potential switch.

Olver writes both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have both held an interest in the 23-year-old and scouted the player throughout the summer.

The defensive midfielder performed well against the Stamford Bridge club on Tuesday night after the Premier League champions once again lost, continuing their horrendous start to the campaign.

The player was a prominent performer for Marseille last term, appearing 37 times in Ligue 1, according to WhoScored.com.

Marseille's French midfielder Giannelli Imbula (R) vies with Bordeaux's German defender Diego Contento (L) during the French L1 football match between Girondins de Bordeaux (FCGB) and Marseille (OM) on April 12, 2015 at the Chaban-Delmas stadium in Bordea

Imbula joined Porto in July and appeared to be delighted at his move to the Portuguese giants, as cited by UEFA.com: "I'm very happy to have signed for Porto. It is a club that has won many European trophies. They have a great team and I hope to make a contribution."

However, that feeling appears to have evaporated for the player, with his father set to offer his services to Blues boss Jose Mourinho.

Football writer Ben Jata lauded the player during Porto's 2-1 win against Chelsea:

Chelsea have relied on the defensive talents of Nemanja Matic since he rejoined the club from Benfica, but the Blues have looked hollow in midfield since pre-season, and Imbula could reinvigorate the Special One's options in January.

Mourinho has to find a way to get his team playing once again, but they look devoid of confidence and ideas—both in defence and attack.

Imbula has the quality to perform in the Premier League, and he would give Chelsea's attacking contingent the protection to play the game in the manner they wish.
