Berdych Makes Shenzhen Bow

After a relatively uneventful start to this year’s Shenzhen Open, all eyes were on the top seed as he began his quest for glory. Krajicek, who impressed in his opening match against James Duckworth, flew out of the traps in this one, though.
The American took an early break and moved into a 2-0 lead, triggering some thoughts of a potential upset. But once Berdych got into his stride, there was only going to be one winner. The imposing Czech broke back immediately and went on to win the first set 7-5.
Krajicek didn’t put up quite as much of a fight in the second, as Berdych dictated with his thunderous groundstrokes and powerful serving. Eventually, the world No. 5 won the second stanza 6-3 and as we can see here, courtesy of Live Tennis, totted up an impressive number of aces in the process:

Robredo is a man many expect to challenge Berdych here, and he also had to battle hard in the opening stages. The Spaniard was up against Japan’s Hiroki Moriya, ranked 189 places below Robredo in the world, and the outsider gave a strong account of himself in an even first set.
But the third seed showed his superior mental strength late in the opener, breaking Moriya and taking the first stanza 7-5. From there, the veteran Spaniard took complete control of the contest, securing an early break in the second set and eventually wrapping it up 6-3.

Elsewhere, the hopes of local teenager Zhizhen Zhang were ended by sixth seed Jiri Vesely, with the Czech securing a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory to march on into the last eight. Zhang is 543 places below Vesely in the ATP world rankings, meaning he was always going to find this one difficult.
But credit must go to Vesely, who has been impressive so far in Shenzhen. His win sets up a clash with compatriot Berdych in the last eight.
One seed who isn’t going to be in the quarter-finals is Victor Estrella Burgos, as Bolelli beat him on Wednesday.

The Italian has made it to the last eight of an ATP event seven times now this calendar year, and he’ll be desperate to go even further after Burgos retired with the scores at 6-4, 4-0 in favour of Bolelli. His reward for this win will be a clash with Robredo in the quarter-finals in what should be an intriguing tussle.
The Shenzhen crowd will get their first glimpse of Marin Cilic on Thursday, as the second seed begins his tournament against John Millman. Promising Brit Aljaz Bedene will also be hoping to build on an impressive win in the first round over Mikhail Youzhny when up against Hyeon Chung.
Getting a win here will be crucial for Berdych, who has still not completely cemented his place for the end-of-season ATP finals. He’ll be acutely aware that players such as Cilic, not to mention others such as Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori and David Ferrer, will be chasing him down in the rankings; a tournament win to start the Asian swing would be a massive boost to his chances.
