Ranking Borussia Dortmund's Top 5 Players for September
Borussia Dortmund have had an interesting month. It began with a win over Hannover, a Europa League victory over FK Krasnodar and then another over Bayer Leverkusen in front of their own fans at the Westfalenstadion.
But then came a surprising draw with Hoffenheim, which allowed Bayern Munich to take a two-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga, and then another against Darmstadt on Sunday. Dortmund may still be second in the league, but this month has ended nearly as badly as it started brightly.
Yet despite the turn in form, there have still been some impressive players in Thomas Tuchel's squad over the past month. Here are the top five players for Dortmund in September.
5. Julian Weigl
1 of 5
First on our list is none other than the Dortmund boy wonder at the heart of Tuchel's new-look midfield: Julian Weigl.
The young starlet has very quickly made himself at home in the base of Dortmund's central trio and looked more than competent in the Europa League and Bundesliga, despite playing in the 2.Bundesliga for 1860 Munich last season.
This 20-year-old talent may go on to become a star at the Westfalenstadion, if his start to life at Dortmund is anything to go by.
4. Matthias Ginter
2 of 5
Another young player who has been turning heads since Tuchel took charge of the club is Matthias Ginter, who has continued to impress from the right-back position over the course of the past month.
According to Transfermarkt, the former central defender has claimed no less than five assists and one goal from the right wing over the month of September. And although stats don't always tell the full picture, those go some way toward explaining just how useful Ginter has been on the right flank.
Not only does Ginter look to be enjoying himself on the pitch for the first time since leaving Freiburg, but he also once again looks like a young player with real talent. Is right-back a viable, long-term option for the defender?
3. Shinji Kagawa
3 of 5
Next on our list is Shinji Kagawa. The Japanese international kicked off the new season in splendid form after a bright pre-season under Tuchel.
Although Kagawa's form may have dropped off in the month of September—with one Bundesliga goal and assist this month rather than two assists and a goal in August according to Transfermarkt—but the attacking midfielder has still been one of Dortmund's best players.
Under the new manager Kagawa has reclaimed his spot as the side's No.10 and for now continues to be one of the club's most influencial players.
2. Henrikh Mkhitaryan
4 of 5
So far this season, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has probably been Dortmund's best player, yet in the month of September we saw a slight drop in his performances, bringing him down to second place.
The Armenian international has still looked fantastic compared to last season's woes, with a goal against Hannover and an important assist while facing Bayer Leverkusen, but he has had a notable drop-off in performance.
Alas, the attacking midfielder is still an immediate starter for Tuchel and probably still the best player in his midfield this season.
1. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
5 of 5
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in every single Bundesliga game he's featured in during the month of September. In fact, he scored twice in two of them.
That alone would be reason to suggest that the striker has been Dortmund's best player this month, yet Aubameyang is not only scoring goals but also playing far better than he used to.
The forward has gone from a simple scorer of goals to one who can set up his teammates and play across the front line with a physical, technical style that makes him far more useful to his colleagues on the pitch.
Aubameyang has always been a good player, but under Tuchel, he looks great.
