Shenzhen Open 2015: Tuesday Tennis Scores, Results and Updated Draw Schedule

Matt JonesSep 29, 2015

Adrian Mannarino was the highest-seeded player to progress on Tuesday at the Shenzhen Open, as we got our first look at some of the genuine competitors for the tournament title.

The Frenchman, seeded fifth at the competition, made light work of his compatriot Lucas Pouille, running out a 6-0, 6-3 victor. Jiri Vesely, Aljaz Bedene and Victor Estrella Burgos, seeded sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, also made it through to Round 2 of the tournament.

Here’s a look back at the results from the singles on Tuesday and how the main draw’s matches panned out.

Confident Start for Seeded Players

Mannarino came into this tournament with a lofty seeding of fifth, and he looks like a man beset on making the most of his high ranking after a comprehensive display against Pouille.

The world No. 39 was far too accomplished for his compatriot, setting the tone in a thoroughly lopsided opening set. Mannarino took it 6-0 in double-quick time, showcasing the gulf in class between the pair very early on. A win was never in doubt from that point, as the fifth seed coasted to an easy win.

Vesely, who is ranked as the sixth favourite for glory in Shenzhen, also laid down a marker with a strong opening display. The home crowd were well behind the Czech’s opponent, local wild card Ze Zhang, but despite a game effort from the Chinese player, Vesely eventually had too much class, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

After a disappointing semi-final exit for Vesely at the Kaohsiung Challenger tournament last time out, where he was seeded first, the world No. 40 will be keen to turn in a better performance in Shenzhen. Encouragingly, the left-hander never looked in danger here.

British representation comes from Bedene, who has been making solid progress in 2015. Coming into this tournament, the 26-year-old occupies a career-high world ranking of 55 and a subsequent seeding of seventh. But he was handed a tough draw in Round 1 against the capable veteran Mikhail Youzhny.

Bedene performed admirably once again, though. He took the first set 6-3 and, after an early break in the second, never looked back to book his place in Round 2.

The most danger any of the seeded players were in was in the match involving Burgos, who had to battle hard to get the better of Matthew Ebden.

Having qualified for the main draw with a win on Monday, the Aussie shocked the eighth seed to take the first set 6-4. But credit must go to the man from the Dominican Republic, who ground out the next two—7-6 (3), 6-4—to edge through.

Meanwhile, top seed Tomas Berdych, who begins his tournament on Wednesday against American Austin Krajicek, was out enjoying some of the local culture:

Berdych will be the star attraction after what has been an otherwise low-key beginning to this competition. But there were signs on Tuesday, particularly from Mannarino, Vesely and Bedene, that there are players just below the elite level who will pose a major threat in Shenzhen.

Marin Cilic, who is seeded second and likely to pose the biggest eventual challenge to Berdych, begins his tournament against John Millman.
