Fitzgerald Sets Record for Career Touchdowns Against 49ers

Bleacher Report MilestonesSep 29, 2015

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught a pair of touchdown passes in a 47-7 Week 3 win over the San Francisco 49ers, giving him a record-setting 14 career touchdowns in games against the 49ers, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Andre Rison previously held the record, having scored 12 touchdowns against the 49ers during his illustrious 12-year career.

Of course, Rison only faced the 49ers 13 times, whereas Fitzgerald has now made a whopping 23 appearances against the storied franchise.

Although his Cardinals have only won nine of those 23 games, Fitzgerald has averaged 5.5 catches for 78 yards and 0.6 touchdowns in the contests.

He has more receiving yards against the 49ers than any other team, but he's caught more passes (138) and scored more touchdowns (16) against the St. Louis Rams.

The NFC West has easily boasted the toughest collection of defenses in any division over the last four or five years, but it was actually a more offensive-minded (and weaker) division back in Fitzgerald's prime.

Of course, with 23 catches for 333 receiving yards and an NFL-best five touchdowns through three games, the 32-year-old Fitzgerald may be hitting a second prime.

The biggest problem in recent years wasn't so much his declining skill as the tough division and his team's constant injury issues at quarterback.

If Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer stays healthy, Fitzgerald should comfortably reach the 1,000-yard mark for the first time since 2011.
