California HS Football Player Kicks Helmetless Player on Video
A matchup between Lakewood and Long Beach Millikan High School in California ended in multiple ugly incidents Friday, as video shows a Millikan player kicking Lakewood running back Victor Bates' helmetless head following a passing play.
As noted by USA Today, Bates lost his helmet on a short gain before being approached by a player wearing No. 29. The Long Beach Millikan player then swung his leg in Bates' direction as he attempted to get up, connecting with his head. The two teams got into a skirmish after the play, though referees did not call a penalty for either side.
After the game, members of Bates' family are alleged to have attacked four Long Beach Millikan players in the locker room. In a statement released on the program's Facebook page, the school says it has identified the culprits and will pursue the case with law enforcement:
"After the Millikan vs Lakewood football game, our players were headed to Lakewood locker room to collect their belongings. Security unlocked it for them and along with a coach and trainer, they headed in. A Lakewood player's family pushed the security guard aside and then attacked 4 of our players. Two were struck in the face and two were grabbed by the neck. Physically bruised but I am sure emotionally not okay. This all happened in less than 30 seconds and the family was out before the coach and trainer could do something. Security did nothing to stop the family from leaving. Fortunately, they know who they are and arrests are the next step. Both Millikan and Lakewood administration are involved along with police reports being filed. This will not be hidden and will not go away, rest assured.
"
The identity of the players attacked and the family members have not been released at this time. Information on the player who kicked Bates has also not been made public at this time. It is unclear if that information will be released because the players involved are minors.
Long Beach Millikan says it is not permitted to offer further statement because a criminal investigation is ongoing. Lakewood won the game 34-14.
