Weeden Breaks Cowboys Record for Consecutive Completions

Bleacher Report MilestonesSep 28, 2015

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden completed his first nine passes in Sunday's 39-28 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, giving him a franchise-record 21 consecutive completions dating back to a game against the Arizona Cardinals last season, per Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

With Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo out until at least midseason due to a fractured clavicle, the game plan for Weeden largely revolved around the running game and short passes, allowing the 31-year-old to get off to a hot start.

Led by running back Joseph Randle, the Cowboys put up 28 points on six first-half drives, but they failed to score on four second-half drives.

With Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Devonta Freeman and wide receiver Julio Jones all having huge days, Atlanta had little trouble rallying back from first-half deficits of 21-7 and 28-14.

Weeden ultimately completed 22 of his 26 pass attempts for 232 yards, but he didn't have any touchdowns and threw an interception.

Had he added three more passes to his streak at the beginning of the game, he would've tied Donovan McNabb's NFL record of 24 consecutive completions, set back in 2004 for the Philadelphia Eagles, per ESPN Stats & Info.

The Cowboys won't be expecting any more runs at the record books, as they're simply hoping for competency until Romo returns.
