Alabama QB Commit Jalen Hurts Totals 384 Yards, 5 TDs in Week 5
Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback commit Jalen Hurts has been electric through the first month of his senior season at Channelview High School in Texas.
His latest effort—a five-touchdown performance, per Gerry Hamilton of ESPN—served further notice Nick Saban landed a dynamic playmaker. The 6'2", 208-pound prospect picked apart opposing defenders Friday night throughout a 56-28 victory over Port Arthur Memorial High School.
Hurts, who pledged to Alabama in June, completed 17 of 25 pass attempts for 234 yards and two touchdowns. He flashed scintillating rushing abilities, gaining another 150 yards and three scores on the ground.
Rated ninth nationally among dual-threat quarterbacks in 2016 composite rankings, Hurts is considered one of the Lone Star State's premier offensive prospects. He continued to validate that reputation against Port Arthur.
Hurts led his offensive attack to more than 600 total yards, delivering a slew of big plays while operating inside and outside the pocket. His longest touchdown of the evening occurred early, as he fired a 37-yard first-quarter strike to start off a high-scoring affair.
His heroics helped push Channelview to a 5-0 record. It's been a highly successful individual campaign to this point, as Hurts opened with a 365-yard, five-touchdown game against Dayton High School, per MaxPreps.
He completed 57 percent of throws during the past two seasons, tallying 4,065 yards, 35 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. Hurts emerged as a major dual threat in 2014, rushing for 951 yards and 19 scores.
His list of scholarship offers also includes Arizona, Kansas State, West Virginia and Mississippi State.
Hurts visited several universities this spring, traveling to Tuscaloosa, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. He committed to Alabama four months after receiving an offer in February.
The program's decision to target another dual-threat talent continues to showcase the direction Alabama may be headed at quarterback.
Hurts would add to a depth chart that currently features promising true freshman Blake Barnett. The 5-star Southern California product can also create opportunities with his mobility.
Both players bring an element of athleticism that hasn't necessarily been present behind center during even the most dominant Crimson Tide campaigns under Saban.
Alabama is enjoying a highly successful recruiting cycle in Texas. Hurts is one of three 4-star recruits who've committed to the Crimson Tide, alongside offensive guard Chris Owens and defensive tackle Kendell Jones.
