Nick Chubb Ties Herschel Walker's Georgia Record of 12 Straight 100-Yard Games
Georgia running back Nick Chubb crossed the 100-yard rushing mark for the 12th consecutive game Saturday against Southern University. The effort matches the school record set by Bulldogs legend Herschel Walker.
Zac Ellis of Sports Illustrated noted the special accomplishment as Georgia beat 49-6 on Saturday.
“It is truly an honor to be mentioned with him,” Chubb said after the game, via Jason Butt of the Telegraph. “Herschel Walker – that’s what you hear about when you think Georgia football.”
The last time Chubb didn't reach 100 yards was in October against Vanderbilt. That's no credit to the Commodores defense, though. He still managed to rush for 78 yards on just eight carries while working behind Todd Gurley on the depth chart.
He moved into the starting lineup the next week after Gurley—who's now in the NFL—was suspended, and Chubb never looked back. The dynamic rusher gained 143 yards against Missouri and has followed that by reaching triple digits 11 more times in a row spanning two seasons.
Any time a player can match a rushing feat held by Walker, one of the top running backs in college football history, is noteworthy. He was a three-time All-American during his time at Georgia and won the Heisman Trophy in 1982. His streak came during the 1980 and 1981 seasons.
Chubb will get an opportunity to set the new standard next week. It won't be an easy task, though. The Bulldogs face Alabama in a key SEC showdown. Nick Saban and his coaching staff are surely going to devote a lot of resources to slowing down Georgia's rushing attack.
The silver lining for Chubb is that he's proved he can handle a heavy workload. Four times during the streak he's carried the ball at least 25 times. A similar outing will likely be necessary next Saturday to keep the streak alive and help Georgia win the game.
