Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the motivation behind a 2011 victory over West Ham, which eventually saw the Londoners relegated from the Premier League.

An excerpt from the former Manchester United boss' new book Leading tells that Ferguson vowed to return to Upton Park and beat West Ham after being taunted by fans and coaching staff during a 4-0 Carling Cup tie earlier that season.

He reveals the tactical switch that led to United overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 in April 2011, by removing Patrice Evra and playing Ryan Giggs at left-back.

United won the match, thanks to a Wayne Rooney hat-trick, and six weeks later, West Ham were relegated.
