20 of Record-Breaker Cristiano Ronaldo's Most Memorable Goals for Real Madrid
Real Madrid have a new all-time top goalscorer.
With his goal against Levante on Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo overtook Raul to become Real's top scorer in all competitions. Raul, who played for Los Blancos from 1994 to 2010, found the net 323 times in 741 appearances.
Ronaldo, who has been with Real since 2009, has now scored 324 goals in just 309 games.
Breaking the record is its own reward, and Ronaldo will rightly go down as one of the best goalscorers in football history. But we here at B/R wanted to give him a little more recognition, so we've compiled a list of 20 of his most memorable goals with Real Madrid.
With so many to choose from, we had to leave out quite a few worthy selections. With that in mind, sit back and enjoy the show.
Which goals would make your list? Let us know in the comments section.
1: Long-Range Free-Kick vs. Marseille, 2009
1 of 12Ronaldo joined Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009 for a world-record fee of £80 million. He quickly showed he was worth every penny, scoring this jaw-dropping free kick against Marseille in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Impressively, Ronaldo was able to score this free-kick from a position that was dead-on straight to goal. Such a position normally makes for a difficult free-kick, but Ronaldo is no normal player.
2: Smooth Finish vs. Liverpool, 2014
2 of 12Among Ronaldo's countless honors is the best goal of the 2014-15 Champions League season, as chosen by representatives of UEFA.
The goal came in a match against Liverpool at Anfield in October 2014. Watch and appreciate the smoothness and skill of Ronaldo's silky finish on this one.
3: Stepovers vs. Schalke, 2014
3 of 12Ronaldo is known for his stepovers, and on this occasion during the 2013-14 Champions League campaign, his close control paid off with a brilliant strike against Schalke.
After taking a pass from Gareth Bale, Ronaldo blew past Joel Matip before beating the goalkeeper with a powerful strike.
Speed, skill and power: That's a lethal combination.
4-8: Demolition of Espanyol
4 of 12In September 2015, Ronaldo was mired in a barren run of four scoreless games—an extremely long drought by his standards.
But then he netted a 13-minute hat-trick against Espanyol and finished the game with five goals. It was Ronaldo's 28th league hat-trick for Real—he grabbed another against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League three days later.
9: Free-Kick vs. APOEL, 2012
5 of 12Earlier, we saw a free-kick Ronaldo scored from a position nearly straight on to goal. In this Champions League game against APOEL in 2012, the Portuguese superstar converted a set piece from a preposterously tight angle.
Honestly, it's just not fair to goalkeepers sometimes.
10-12: Hat-Trick with Solo Stunner vs. Galatasaray, 2013
6 of 12Ronaldo netted a memorable hat-trick against Turkish side Galatasaray in the 2013-14 Champions League.
We've included all three in our list, but the third strike was the pick of the bunch. The goal showcased many of Ronaldo's considerable talents, including fine footwork and powerful finishing.
13: Free-Kick vs. Villarreal, 2010
7 of 12Free-kicks hold a prominent place in this list—and for good reason. Ronaldo is one of the world's top dead-ball specialists.
This goal against Villarreal, from February 2010, showed he can even score from what seem like improbable distances. He really couldn't have hit the ball any better.
14: Dazzling Dribble vs. Almeria, 2010
8 of 12In April 2010, against Almeria, Ronaldo scored a dazzling individual goal many might normally associate with Barcelona's Lionel Messi. Showcasing brilliant skill on the ball, Ronaldo dribbled through the defense to score an absolute stunner.
In addition to its greatness on its own merits, this goal highlighted Ronaldo's versatility. He can beat defenses in so many ways.
15: Backheel vs. Rayo, 2012
9 of 12How do you know a player is at the height of his powers? When a footballer has the confidence to try a cheeky backheel shot, as Ronaldo did here against Rayo Vallecano in February 2012, you know he's playing with confidence.
What's perhaps most impressive is Ronaldo clearly expected to score with that shot.
16-18: Hat-Trick at Atletico, 2012
10 of 12Ronaldo fired in a fine hat-trick against Atletico Madrid in April 2012 as Real Madrid closed in on the Primera Division title.
First, he scored with a knuckling free kick that buckled the knees of Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. He then beat Courtois with a long-range strike that dipped over the 'keeper.
Finally, Ronaldo converted a penalty to finish off an outstanding 4-1 win.
19: Levitation vs. Manchester United, 2013
11 of 12Can a human being fly?
The answer is obviously "no," but Ronaldo might have made some people wonder with this goal against former club Manchester United in the 2012-13 Champions League knockout stages.
Simple physics really ought to ensure no man can hang in the air that long. But Ronaldo laughs at something as silly as gravity.
20: The Record-Breaker vs. Levante
12 of 12
The record-breaking goal itself had to be recognised simply for the fact it took Ronaldo past Raul's mark.
Prior to the game, Ronaldo took to the pitch with the golden shoe he picked up for being last season's top marksman in Europe.
And it seems he's not ready to relinquish that tag just yet, as he wowed the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu with a precise finish from the edge of the box to help Real see off Levante and seal his place in the history books.
