Matt Williams Fired as Manager of Washington Nationals

Adam WellsSep 23, 2015

With the Washington Nationals' disappointing season over, the team has decided Matt Williams is not the man to manage the team in the future.

The Nationals confirmed Williams and his staff were relieved of their duties a day after the team's season ended with a 1-0 loss to the New York Mets.

Prior to the end of the season, multiple anonymous players spoke out about Williams' handling of the team.

“It’s a terrible environment,” one player said, according to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post on Sept. 26. “And the amazing part is everybody feels that way.”

“The funny thing is, when you see him away from the park he’s totally different," said another player, per Svrluga.

Williams, who won National League Manager of the Year last season, has drawn the ire of fans in Washington. Fans booed him during a postgame press conference following a loss to the Mets in early September.

Numerous analystsincluding Dave Cameron of FoxSports.comhighlighted Williams' bad tactical decisions down the stretch as the Nationals fell behind the Mets in the National League East race.

Washington has had one of MLB's best rosters on paper for the past two years, including likely 2015 NL MVP Bryce Harper, but it lost in the division series last year and will be home for the postseason.

Williams doesn't deserve all of the blame for the Nationals' downfall in 2015, but his questionable tactics combined with injuries and poor performances from key players gave management no choice but to make a change in the clubhouse.
