NFL Power Rankings Week 3: Examining 2015 Season Before Thursday Night Football

Rob GoldbergSep 24, 2015

The second week of the NFL season showed why it's important not to overreact after one game. Everything we thought we learned seemed wrong, which makes evaluating teams so much tougher going into Week 3.

Surprise winners such as the St. Louis Rams and the San Francisco 49ers looked awful in their second games, while squads like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns quickly reversed their fortunes with Week 2 wins.

There will likely be many more shocking moments over the course of the year, but it's important to keep a broad perspective when judging each team. That means even head-to-head losers will sometimes remain ahead of their previous opponent if a turnaround is expected.

Top Fallers

Indianapolis Colts

Those questioning Andrew Luck's ability might be going too far. He is still one of the top young quarterbacks in the game and should be able to turn things around before too long. However, there is no denying the former No. 1 overall pick has struggled so far this season.

In two games, Luck has accumulated a 58.9 quarterback rating thanks to five interceptions and only three touchdowns. He even admitted he was the major problem after the squad fell to 0-2, per Kevin Bowen of Colts.com:

Head coach Chuck Pagano discussed the self-inflicted problems to start the year, per ESPN.com's Mike Wells:

"

We have a really good football team. It gets frustrating when you just shoot yourself in the foot, so to speak. I know we're better than we played, and we've seen glimpses of that. You have to do it on a consistent basis. You're disappointed, not discouraged, so to speak. This is not unfamiliar territory for us. Do we want to be in this situation? No. Do we want to be 0-2? No. Do we want to have the turnovers and the penalties and the self-inflicted negatives that are going on? No.

"

There are certainly issues with the offensive line as well as major injuries to the defensive secondary. However, there is enough talent all over the field to overcome this as long as Luck plays to his ability.

The Colts started 0-2 last season before reaching the AFC Championship Game, so while this is not an enviable position, the year is clearly not over. With three straight divisional opponents coming up, look for Indianapolis to bounce back and once again show why it is one of the top teams in the NFL.

Chicago Bears

Unlike the Colts, there is less encouragement for the Chicago Bears to turn things around. After finishing 5-11 a year ago, the team has seemingly gotten worse with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Alshon Jeffery was supposed to take over as the No. 1 option for the departed Brandon Marshall, but he has dealt with injuries. Of course, even if healthy, there was no one to replace Jeffery as the No. 2 option. Then again, it doesn't matter much who is playing receiver with no one to throw the ball. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Jay Cutler will miss a few weeks with a hamstring injury:

This leaves the offense in the hands of Jimmy Clausen and his career quarterback rating of 60. Fans make fun of Cutler until they realize how much of a drop-off there is when he is gone.

Still, the biggest problem with the Bears comes on the defensive side of the ball. Even against quality offenses like the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals, allowing 79 points in two games is unacceptable.

With an upcoming road trip to face an angry Seattle Seahawks squad, things are likely going to get worse before they get better.

New Orleans Saints

It's one thing to lose to likely playoff teams and top contenders. It's another to look completely flat and lose at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers like the New Orleans Saints did in Week 2.

The defense couldn't slow down Jameis Winston in his first career road start, while Drew Brees and the offense never got going against a defense that was recently torched by Marcus Mariota. ESPN's Mike Greenberg made a bold statement about the struggling team:

Perhaps the most alarming part is the fact the Saints no longer have the home-field advantage that was once considered the best in the league, as noted by Patrick Daugherty of Rotoworld:

There are conflicting reports about Brees' shoulder injury, with Katherine Terrell of the Times-Picayune calling the quarterback day-to-day, while NFL Network's Ian Rapoport initially reported he could miss "several games." The team would clearly be much worse if the Pro Bowl quarterback was unable to suit up for the foreseeable future.

In reality, the Saints are going to struggle no matter who is under center. After a disappointing effort on both sides of the ball in Week 2, New Orleans currently stands as the worst of the worst in the NFL.
