Why the Eagles can cover the spread

Not much is going Philly's way at the moment following last week's 20-10 loss at home to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Eagles trailed only 6-0 in the third quarter but had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown. A few series later, they drove deep inside the Dallas red zone with a chance to get within one score, but quarterback Sam Bradford tossed an ill-advised interception in the end zone, and Philly never recovered.

Two weeks ago, the Eagles opened the season with a 26-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, falling outright as three-point road favorites. Philadelphia trailed 20-3 at the half and rallied to take the lead with eight minutes to go, but the Eagles gave up a field goal and couldn't mount a late drive.

Yes, they've started terribly, but the Eagles were expected to contend in the NFC East this season. And there's still time. It might take only a couple of games or even a couple of plays, but Philly could turn this thing around.

Why the Jets can cover the spread

New York is off to a great start under new head coach Todd Bowles, winning its first two games, including a 20-7 decision against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night. The Jets outrushed the Colts 101-93, won time of possession by a 32-28 margin and came up with five Indy turnovers while committing just one themselves. That's how you win games and cover spreads in the NFL.

New York opened this season with a 31-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns, easily covering as a three-point home favorite.

The Jets are getting back to doing what they did early in the Rex Ryan era: running the ball down opponents' throats while pounding foes on defense. And newcomerssuch as wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who has caught a touchdown pass in each game so far, and cornerback Darrelle Revis, who's recovered three fumbles and made one pickare leading the way. As long as quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick hits on some third-down throws and doesn't turn the ball over, New York is going to win some games this season.

Smart pick

The Jets are playing some inspired ball at the moment, while the Eagles and their whole city seem on the edge of rebellion. The smart choice here is with the home team at the short spread.
