Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook Fight Expected by Coach Virgil Hunter

Gianni VerschuerenSep 22, 2015

Amir Khan's trainer Virgil Hunter hopes his pupil will finally fight longtime rival Kell Brook in the near future, a contest he believes would be great for Great Britain and the sport of boxing.

A fight between the two welterweights is something fans and pundits alike have been dreaming of for years, and per Hunter, they're not the only ones. As he told the Daily Mail (h/t Edward Chaykovsky of BoxingScene.com):

"

I would hope at some point that they both fight each other. I know it would be good for Great Britain, good for him and good for boxing.

I've never pushed him to take the fight because it's obvious there are some things going on between them from long before I came along. Little bits and pieces that I get like 'you disrespected me' or 'you're not well known enough' or who won the sparring sessions when they were amateurs.

It has all the ingredients for a big fight. I'm sure that if both continue to fight that the fight's going to happen.

The 29-year-old Brook has been one of the rising stars of British boxing for the past couple of years, but so far, a dream matchup with Khan, one of Britain's top welterweights, has yet to materialise.

As reported by Sky Sports, Brook has called out Khan multiple times in the past, which didn't help their relationship, but while the undefeated Brook was rising through the ranks, Khan spent most of his time trying to secure a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr, per Sky Sports.

British fighting fans have been begging for the two former sparring partners to meet for years, and Brooks' promoter Eddie Hearn knows this fight could be the next British superfight.

Khan is currently negotiating a potential bout with Ruslan Provodnikov, per Sky Sports, and the Yorkshire Post's Daniel Gregory is afraid of what that bout may be do for the negotiations between him and Brook:

This bout has the potential to sell out Wembley Stadium and be just as big as the superfight between Carl Froch and George Groves, whose rematch in 2014 was one of the biggest events in British boxing history, per Nick Harris of the Mail on Sunday.

Brook has repeatedly made it clear he's anxious for this fight to happen, and with Hunter now throwing his weight, British fight fans have to believe the bout is close.
