With Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw also sidelined, manager Louis van Gaal will have to resort to going with the recovering Phil Jones on the bench, as he told MUTV, via Alex Urquhart-Cannon of the club's official website:
"Rojo has a hamstring injury and Paddy McNair has a minor injury. I have to admit that because of the injury of three defenders [including Luke Shaw], I shall have Jones on the bench but he is not fit.
"
The 20-year-old hasn't featured much for United early in the season, but with Shaw sidelined for the foreseeable future, his playing time seemed set to rise significantly. McNair is versatile enough to be an impact substitute off the bench both in defence and midfield, and with depth a huge concern for Van Gaal, losing yet another player is a big setback for the Red Devils.
Fortunately, it sounds as if McNair's injury isn't all that serious, and while we don't know whether he'll be fit in time to face Sunderland on Saturday, he should return to the United bench soon enough.
