Richie Incognito Discusses Return to Miami for 1st Time Since 2013 Suspension

Tim DanielsSep 22, 2015

Buffalo Bills guard Richie Incognito wishes the bullying scandal that derailed his career with the Miami Dolphins would fade into the background. He admits, however, returning to Sun Life Stadium for the first time since the situation became headline news in 2013 "has a little more meaning."

Mike Rodak of ESPN.com reports Incognito understands the drama may never go away—"the Monday Night Football guys will probably be bringing it up for five years from now"—but he's trying to move forward. He described the feeling ahead of Sunday's clash with the Dolphins.

"I think it's one of those things in professional sports where you cross paths with one of your old teams, and you want to give it to them," Incognito said. " ... It's like brotherly love. You want to kick your brother's butt in anything you do."

The 32-year-old lineman stated he's still close with a lot of people in Miami and is looking forward to meeting up with them when the Bills travel south. As for the crowd reaction, he isn't sure what type of reception he'll receive from the Dolphins faithful, per Rodak:

"

I have no idea what to expect [from the crowd]. I really have no idea. Like I said, I've got a lot of friends in the organization. I've got a lot of friends that still play down there. I've got a lot of friends in the South Florida area. I've always had a lot of love from their fans. I've got a lot of respect for them.

"

Buffalo took some heat for signing Incognito, who sat out all of last season as he waited for another opportunity to arise following the incident with teammate Jonathan Martin, who is now retired. Yet any distractions Incognito's addition may have caused have been minimal.

He's emerged as a rare bright spot along a lackluster line. While the Bills allowed the Patriots to sack Tyrod Taylor eight times in a loss to New England on Sunday, most of those came via Jamie Collins and Chandler Jones against Buffalo's struggling tackles.

One of the Bills' other breakdowns in the loss was letting their emotions get the best of them in the key AFC East matchup. The result was 14 penalties for 140 yards. They can't let the same thing happen when they take on the Dolphins in another crucial division game.

So while this matchup is special for Incognito, he must keep himself in check. Clearly, the last thing he wants is more headlines focused on him.
