Flynn Reportedly on Cowboys' Radar

Although Tony Romo will not require surgery for his broken collarbone, he is expected to miss at least the next seven games, according to ESPN.com's Todd Archer. That leaves Brandon Weeden to man the position, although Ed Werder of ESPN noted Flynn is among those scheduled to try out for the Cowboys.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports expects the Cowboys to add Flynn, if they wind up signing a quarterback after Romo's injury.

Flynn has played for the Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks in his career and last took the field for the Packers in 2014. He threw only 16 passes all year because he was behind superstar Aaron Rodgers on the depth chart.

In fact, the only season of Flynn’s career when he threw more than 66 passes came in 2013, after Rodgers broke his collarbone. The LSU product went 102-of-166 in five games, tallying seven touchdown tosses and only four interceptions. He kept Green Bay afloat in the playoff race with a 2-2-1 record, which included a dramatic comeback win over the Cowboys.

Flynn threw for 299 yards and four touchdowns in that victory.

The career backup also won the national title at LSU and proved he can capably fill in for an injured starter on a team with Super Bowl aspirations when Rodgers went down. While Weeden is the clear-cut starter after he completed all seven of his passes in Romo's absence during Sunday’s victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys could add more depth.

Coach Jason Garrett suggested as much, per Archer:

We like the options we have right now. We have Kellen Moore on the practice squad and he's a guy we brought in here for a reason. He's been around Scott Linehan and in this offensive system, felt comfortable with him. But we're always looking to better our team. So if there's a viable option at this position or any position we certainly want to look into it.

"

Adding a veteran option who has played in high-stakes showdowns in college and the NFL would give the Cowboys a security blanket in case injuries continue to rear their ugly head.
