Jets vs. Colts: Score and Twitter Reaction for 'Monday Night Football'

Joseph ZuckerSep 21, 2015

The Indianapolis Colts shouldn't be hitting the panic button just yet, but they will have it at the ready after falling to 0-2 following Monday night's 20-7 loss to the New York Jets.

Andrew Luck struggled for the second week in a row, finishing 21-of-37 for 250 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. He received little support from the run game, as Frank Gore and Josh Robinson combined for 69 yards on 20 carries.

No matter how the ground game fared, many Colts fans will worry most about this tidbit from ESPN Stats & Info:

On the other side, Ryan Fitzpatrick had 244 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 22-of-34 passing. He found Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker early and often, with the two wideouts notching 101 and 97 receiving yards, respectively, plus a touchdown apiece.

Many expected a strong response from the Colts in their first home game of the year after their Week 1 defeat to the Buffalo Bills. Indianapolis scored just 14 points and had 304 yards of total offense in that game.

A major concern for the Colts heading into Monday night was their pass protection—or lack thereof—and its effect on Luck. According to Pro Football Focus, he was 5-of-14 when facing pressure and 9-of-23 when the Bills blitzed.

"We've got to block it up, we've got to throw and we've got to catch," Indianapolis head coach Chuck Pagano said, per Reggie Hayes of the News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Indiana. "There are going to be opportunities there. When people decide to (blitz), you've got to make them pay. If you don't, they're going to keep coming."

While Pagano identified the issue, he was unable to do anything to solve it, as the Jets constantly harassed Luck throughout Monday night's game. ESPN.com's Mike Wells thought the lack of quality on the Colts offensive line further emboldened New York's aggressive attitude up front:

As a result, Luck had one of his worst games ever. When he's outplayed by Fitzpatrick, you know things are going wrong for the Colts.

In addition, if Adam Vinatieri is missing 29-yard field goals, it might not be Indianapolis' night.

That's exactly what happened after the Jets took a 7-0 lead with a six-yard touchdown pass from Fitzpatrick to Decker eight minutes into the game. New York needed to go only nine yards on the drive after an interception by Calvin Pryor set the team up with fantastic field position.

ESPN.com's Mike Sando wondered if a good defense behind Fitzpatrick could help turn around the perception about him:

Although Indianapolis was unable to match the Jets touchdown for touchdown, it looked certain to get three points on the board.

Instead, Vinatieri missed from less than 30 yards for the first time since the 2007 season, according to Sports Illustrated. The 42-year-old had connected on 97.2 percent of his attempts (175 of 180) from 29 yards or less in his career before the missed kick.

Nick Folk added a 35-yard field goal with a minute and 55 seconds left in the first half to put New York ahead 10-0.

The Colts were lucky to go into halftime down just 10 points. They turned the ball over twice in the first two quarters, while Folk missed a 48-yard attempt at the end of the second quarter that could've padded the Jets' advantage.

This was the first time since 1997 the Colts went scoreless in the first half of back-to-back games, per Elias Sports Bureau (h/t ESPN Stats & Info).

As the Indianapolis Star's Gregg Doyel tweeted, three of the Colts' most reliable players underwhelmed through two quarters, which affected the rest of the team:

Even when Indianapolis started turning things around, it couldn't get out of its own way. Case in point: the Colts' opening drive of the third quarter.

Luck and the Indy offense ate nearly 10 minutes off the clock to begin the second half and looked primed to score after setting up a 1st-and-goal at the Jets 3-yard line. Three plays later, however, Gore fumbled, and Darrelle Revis recovered. The NFL passed along the highlight:

Sports Illustrated's Peter King shared his bewilderment:

Donte Moncrief hauled in a 26-yard touchdown catch with 10:16 left in the fourth quarter to get the Colts within three points, 10-7, but Marshall canceled out the score four minutes later with a 15-yard scoring grab.

Any chance of a comeback by the home team was largely extinguished after Luck's third interception of the game.

On one hand, you don't want to place too much emphasis on the Colts' poor start. How many people called for the end of the New England Patriots' dynasty following their Week 4 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs last year?

A lot can change in the NFL in the space of a few weeks, and two big wins by Indianapolis in Weeks 3 and 4 could make Monday night a distant memory.

Then again, the problems plaguing the Colts don't seem easily solvable. The roster appears to have some serious holes, especially on the offensive line and in the pass rush.

NFL.com's Marc Sessler was blistering in his critique of Indianapolis during the game:

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller is already putting Pagano on the hot seat:

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports included general manager Ryan Grigson in that discussion:

While much of the focus from this game will be on the Colts, give plenty of credit to the Jets, who are now 2-0. While the idea of Fitzpatrick leading a team to the playoffs seems like a bit of a long shot, New York's defense is picking up right where it left off in 2014.

The Jets' next three games are against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins. New York could be 4-1 or even 5-0 by the time it meets the New England Patriots on Oct. 25. The result of that matchup might determine the validity of the Jets' postseason credentials.
