Both fans and players gave former Marseille hero Mathieu Valbuena a hostile reception upon his return to the Stade Velodrome on Sunday.

Despite shaking hands with a number of his former teammates in the tunnel before the match, the diminutive Frenchman was subject to a number of heavy tackles on the pitch, while the crowd responded with a hanging effigy and by hurling bottles at him.

Valbuena won one Ligue 1 title and three league cups in a successful eight-year spell at Marseille, who retired his No. 28 shirt when he left for Dynamo Moscow in 2014.
