Liverpool Transfer News: Latest on Jetro Willems and William Carvalho Rumours

Christopher SimpsonSep 19, 2015

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring PSV Eindhoven left-back Jetro Willems as the Dutchman "has stalled on signing a new contract."

That's according to Eindhovens Dagblad (via talkSPORT). According to Transfermarkt the 21-year-old's contract expires in the summer of 2017, which, as talkSPORT noted, means PSV could be tempted to sell him cheaper in 2016 rather than let him leave for nothing a year later.

The magnificently creative left-back racked up an incredible 16 assists in all competitions last season. He also netted four times as well. Willems further showed his attacking prowess by creating 74 chances in the Eredivisie last term and successfully completing 56 per cent of his take-ons, according to Squawka.

He also showed his defensive capabilities, as Squawka also reported he won 53 per cent of his attempted tackles and 55 per cent of his aerial battles.

Here are some of the youngster's highlights:

Benefoot.net's Michiel Jongsma holds Willems in high regard:

Liverpool are fairly well-stocked at left-back, with Alberto Moreno and Joe Gomez both representing solid options, but Willems represents an upgrade on both.

For PSV, losing Willems would continue their worrying trend of having their best talents snapped up by Premier League clubs, following Memphis Depay's move to Manchester United and Georginio Wijnaldum's switch to Newcastle United.

However, there's little the club can do to stop him leaving, so Liverpool's main obstacle would be Champions League teams competing for his signature.

The Dutch international clearly has outstanding potential and appears destined to move onto bigger and better things, so the Reds would pull off a significant coup if they can land him.

Liverpool Target William Carvalho

According to Calciomercato (via Aaron Flanagan of the Mirror), Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is hoping to sign Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho.

Defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva's future at the club appears uncertain, and the player was heavily linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer.

Carvalho would be a strong choice to replace the Brazilian. WhoScored.com demonstrated the Portuguese star's impressive distribution:

Sports journalist Jonas Giaever ran the rule over some of the 23-year-old's key strengths:

The addition of a quality, solid midfielder such as Carvalho in front of the Reds' back four would allow the likes of Jordan Henderson or James Milner to push forward more freely and focus on creating for his team.

Carvalho is sure to leave Portugal for a higher-calibre club and league in the future, so like with Willems, Liverpool could stand to benefit greatly if they act quickly.
