WWE Night of Champions 2015: Biggest Themes Established in Build to Event

Aaron BowerSep 19, 2015

With plenty of star power and every championship on the line, WWE Night of Champions has developed a couple of main storylines built around some intriguing themes.

The situation concerning Seth Rollins and the sheer mass of action he faces is well worth keeping an eye on, with other matches also providing points of interest for fans as the event approaches.

But what are the main themes that have been established so far?

The Art of the Surprise Still Exists

It's nice that, even in this Internet-dominated world we live in, a surprise or two can still exist in professional wrestling.

That's the scenario we face concerning the match with Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns against The Wyatt Family, as nobody is quite sure who the mystery partner is going to be.

That's created a nice bit of momentum and intrigue for their match, with fans expecting, and perhaps believing, that each installment of Raw or SmackDown would see WWE reveal the identity of the mystery competitor.

But that hasn't been the case, and it means things are now set up quite nicely for a grand surprise at Night of Champions. The fact that Reigns and Ambrose haven't revealed who it is just yet perhaps suggests it's going to be a big twist or maybe even a major return.

But whomever it turns out to be, it's shown that WWE can keep some things quiet, and when they do, it gets fans interested.

The Tag Team Division Matters Once Again

There have been a fair few false dawns in the past with the tag division; that much we do know.

But this time as we head towards Night of Champions, it does feel like the intensity and interest in the division has bumped up a sizable amount with the return of The Dudley Boyz.

Their resurgence has given the division a real shot in the arm, with Bubba Ray and D-Von looking in great shape upon their return to the company. They've been winning plenty of matches and putting on a great show in the process, and their momentum has been interesting to watch as Night of Champions approaches.

But The New Day also deserve plenty of credit here. Not least because they've turned a pretty poor gimmick into a hugely successful one, with all three members of the group playing their part to make The New Day a success.

The result here is genuinely interesting, because there's a potential argument to support either team. But whatever the result and whoever the winner is, it's just great to see the tag division on solid ground once again.

Seth Rollins' Vulnerability

The WWE World Heavyweight Champion has on occasions looked untouchable since his triumphant victory at WrestleMania.

With plenty of hired help and The Authority's shoulder to constantly lean on, Rollins has coasted through some of his challenges with plenty of guidance and a lot of backup.

But as we hurtle towards Night of Champions, the champ looks slightly more vulnerable than he has in the past. Booking him for two matches has instantly done that anyway, but some of the promo work with Sting and The Authority have left a chink of vulnerability in his game.

Sting has constantly gotten the upper hand on Rollins since their match was announced, with him destroying Rollins' statue and causing him to lose on Raw being prime examples.

Then last week, Rollins was left on the outside of the ring whilst Sting and John Cena celebrated in the ring.

Is it all a ploy by WWE to make him look weak so he can strike with many doubting him? Whatever the case, it's been interesting to note Rollins' momentum seriously faltering down the stretch.
