Seth Rollins vs. John Cena: Best Booking Options at WWE Night of Champions 2015

Sebastian MaldonadoSep 19, 2015

WWE Night of Champions will be quite the test for Seth Rollins.

He squares off against Sting, the challenger, who covets Rollins’ WWE title. Rollins will have his work cut out to turn the tide in his favor against the crafty veteran.

But first, Rollins must defend his United States title against John Cena.

Cena secured his rematch after losing his United States championship to Rollins at SummerSlam. The Cena and Rollins bout for the U.S. title will be a rubber match.

Let’s review some significant former matches. Cena won the first bout on Raw, overcoming a broken nose and making Rollins tap to the STF. Rollins won the second at SummerSlam with help from Jon Stewart.

The magnitude of this encounter is huge. Rollins once again is tasked with taking on Cena, the most accomplished WWE Superstar today.

How should this match go down? Better question: How will it go down?

Let’s analyze the possibilities of how this match will progress. It’s time to think about the best booking options for Seth Rollins vs. John Cena III.

Expect more of the hard-hitting moves and takedowns from both men. However, don’t count on Rollins hitting another Attitude Adjustment on Cena.

Maybe Cena hits a Pedigree on Rollins—poetic justice at work.

And frankly, Cena won’t dominate this bout. He was barely a dominant force at work in the first two battles. This third encounter won’t play any differently.

What Cena should focus on is his temper. This is the same man who carried that U.S. title with pride and was essentially robbed of that honor.

Rollins is the right type of guy to get under Cena’s skin. It’s up to Cena to keep his composure during the bout.

Cena should also hit high-impact moves. Rollins can take the beating, but honestly, the human body can only take so much. Cena’s arsenal of moves only demonstrates that he’s more than just a five-move wrestler.

Rollins should have a different strategy than at SummerSlam. He tried to match Cena move-for-move, which almost cost him.

This isn’t the case of Cena vs. Kevin Owens, where Owens had to impress the WWE fans and win the match. All Rollins needs to focus on is winning.

The best option for Rollins is to ground Cena. Granted, the former United States champion is not a highflyer. Cena’s legs anchor his strength.

Rollins must attack and strike down his opponent’s legs to gain full advantage. How could Cena hoist up Rollins for an Attitude Adjustment with one good leg?

The more Rollins grounds Cena, the better his chances are as the match progresses.

How will this match end? If you look at the history books, it doesn’t bode well for Rollins.

WWE champions who hold more than just the world title don’t hold on to that privilege very long.

Stone Cold Steve Austin became tag team champions while he was the WWE champion on two occasions. He won with the Undertaker in 1998 and Triple H in 2001. Those reigns barely lasted six weeks, combined!

Rob Van Dam defeated Cena in 2006 to become the WWE champion. He was awarded the ECW title from Paul Heyman two days after his victory. Nearly one month later, Van Dam lost both titles as quickly as he won them.

Even Cena isn’t immune to this. However, he was the most successful.

Cena teamed with Shawn Michaels to defeat Edge and Randy Orton (Rated-RKO) to become tag team champions. They headlined WrestleMania 23 against each other during their reign as champions.

The team imploded, leaving The Hardys to become tag team champions.

History shows WWE champions don’t do well with more than one title around their waist. The past is against Seth Rollins. Everything is booked to have Rollins lose this bout.

That’s why Rollins should come out on top for this one. Granted, it won’t be clean, but Rollins will find a way to get the underhanded victory.

The best bet will be Seth Rollins rolling up Cena while holding the ropes. Rollins is being booked as a desperate man. It would be apropos for him to gain the upper hand by utilizing dastardly deeds.
