WWE Rumors: Buzz on Road to WWE Night of Champions 2015 for Week of Sept. 17

Aaron BowerSep 17, 2015

Those who are perplexed by the mysterious booking of Damien Sandow will have a vested interest in the latest batch of WWE rumors doing the rounds.

Sandow's expected push after splitting from The Miz never came about and left many fans wondering what was next for the former Money in the Bank briefcase winner.

But developments this week suggest a potential change in fortunes for Sandow, as well as a few other storylines doing the rounds. Let's take a look at the latest speculation and talk surrounding some WWE stars with this week's rumors.

Damien Sandow Gets a New (or Old) Gimmick

He's back! Sort of. It seems that after a few months spent in the wilderness following the abandonment of the Damien Mizdow gimmick, the original Damien Sandow is now back.

WWE spurned and ultimately wasted a lot of momentum when Sandow split from The Miz, as his character was perhaps hotter and more over than it had ever been before. But instead of seizing the moment with Sandow, it tossed him into a disastrous, short-lived team with Curtis Axel.

But WrestlingInc.com's Marc Middleton writes that Sandow could be given another chance with his original character, the one that did seem to have something about it.

Sandow emerged for the dark match at this week's Main Event taping in his old blue robe and even cut a promo to describe himself as being back as The Voice of Common Sense, not a copycat or a double for someone else.

He was in his old ring attire, operating as a babyface and even managed to beat Adam Rose.

This could be the start of something genuinely exciting for WWE and for Sandow. Clearly he's got a lot of work to do to force his way back up the card, but even testing the waters with Sandow on Raw will surely draw an impressive and positive reaction from crowds.

Sandow is a hugely popular figure, and much like other stars like Cesaro, there's somewhat of a feeling of injustice surrounding his booking. If WWE rolls the dice with this original gimmick and opts to keep it as it is, there's every chance we could be about to see a lot more Damien Sandow on our screens once again.

The Mystery Partner Update

One of the biggest and most interesting storylines heading toward Night of Champions this Sunday is just who is going to be stood alongside Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose come their match against The Wyatt Family.

Ambrose and Reigns (well, WWE) have opted to keep that a secret, which will hopefully inject an element of surprise into the pay-per-view this weekend.

Talk is rife all over the Internet about who the third man is going to be, but PWInsider Elite (h/t WrestlingInc.com) have gone into a bit more detail and thrown up a few potential names.

More on one of those later, but the two that are mentioned here are Kane and Chris Jericho. It's difficult to imagine Kane as the man of choice given how his most previous role was as a heel, and there's nothing that has happened to suggest a split from The Authority. It's noted that the monster vs. monster element, pitting Kane against Braun Strowman, could be a reason for his involvement.

But the more interesting name here is Chris Jericho. As is well-known, Jericho has an interesting schedule with WWE in that he works a lot of live events and shows, but he hasn't been seen on TV for quite some time. In fact, excluding the WWE Network special from Japan, Jericho's last TV appearance was way back last December.

That could suggest another run is imminent, and it's interesting to note Jericho has plenty of previous history with Bray Wyatt. They've had plenty of bouts at live shows, but they have also feuded at numerous pay-per-view and TV shows throughout the mid part of 2014.

If WWE is after a surprise, then Jericho's appearance would certainly give plenty of people something to cheer about.

A Note on Erick Rowan

The other man that was mentioned in the article without directly being linked to being a potential partner for Reigns and Ambrose was former Wyatt Family member Erick Rowan.

Again, PWInsider Elite is noting that Rowan isn't quite at the level considered to be able to get back in the ring just yet after recovering from his elbow injury.

In fact, Rowan is scheduled to show up at WWE's Performance Center to knuckle down with training and get back to in-ring condition.

But that might be a blessing in disguise for Rowan, because if he would have been fit for Night of Champions, there's a likelihood he could have been thrown in as a babyface to go at it with The Wyatt Family. That would have been a complete mistake and a real disaster for Rowan.

Surely Rowan's future lies back in The Wyatt Family with Luke Harper. There's no rule to say the family has to be just three members, and if there are four, then Strowman can act as Wyatt's heavy whilst Harper and Rowan set about taking the tag division by storm.

Those two have real chemistry as a pair, and it would be great to see them have a real tilt at the tag titles. When Rowan does return, it should be as a heel and with Bray Wyatt.

Lana and Rusev to Join Forces Again?

Finally this week, a story that emerged overnight on Wednesday concerning one of the most disastrous storylines of the year so far.

There can be little doubt that the Rusev/Summer Rae vs. Dolph Ziggler/Lana storyline has really backfired, and it's done little for anyone in the feud.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingInc.com) is hinting that the whole thing could be coming to an end, as there are plans starting to gather pace for Lana and Rusev to join forces once again.

The crux of the decision is based around Rusev and Lana both looking significantly weaker since they split earlier this year, an opinion that is hard to disagree with.

They were both excellent as a duo, and unfortunately for Lana, her proposed babyface push just hasn't really gone to plan. But with Lana out for a few months due to injury, WWE has a good while to sit on this decision and make sure it's the right one.

But turning Lana or Ziggler to enact a reunion would be a good move in terms of helping all parties to move on from this pretty poor storyline. It's left everyone feeling a bit flat, and if Rusev can ever get back to the highest he was at around the beginning of this year, he will probably need Lana by his side.
