Bills Coach Rex Ryan Says King Kong Is Only Thing That Can Cover Rob Gronkowski

Kyle NewportSep 16, 2015

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has been in the NFL for five-plus years now, but opposing coaches have yet to figure out how to stop him on the football field.

Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan has tried for years to stop Gronk. Considering Gronkowski had 461 yards and five touchdowns against Ryan's defenses for the New York Jets, per Pro-Football-Reference.com, it's safe to say the defensive mastermind has yet to come up with an answer.

However, Ryan does have a theory on how to cover the 6'6", 265-pound tight end. He just doesn't have the personnel to execute the game plan.

"We're not going to ask one guy to cover him," Ryan said Wednesday, per ESPN.com's Mike Rodak. "Yeah, he'd have to look like King Kong."

Currently, the Bills don't have King Kong on their roster. With the Patriots set to visit Buffalo this weekend, Ryan better search the free-agent market long and hard.

Gronkowski, of course, is coming off a monster performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the season opener. He had five catches for 94 yards and three touchdowns. Even after an offseason to prepare, the Steelers had no answer for the beast that is Gronk.

Ryan took notice of Gronkowski's opening act and is just hoping his team can limit the damage.

"He's hard to cover. He's going to make catches. You just don't want him to go off on you for three touchdowns or whatever," Ryan said, per Rodak. "He's as good of a tight end as there is in the league. He's pretty good."

Ryan, according to Rodak, said the Bills may go as far as playing some triple coverage on Gronkowski on Sunday. The former Jets coach has to know even that might not be enough.

As Andie Hagemann of NFL.com noted, Ryan says he "can't wait" for the Patriots to get to town. But he is probably secretly hoping Gronk misses the flight to Buffalo.
