Groundskeepers Accidentally Spread Weed Killer on HS Football Field

Somewhere in the northwest Chicago suburbs, a high school football team is considering alternative arrangements for its upcoming home game.

Because that's what you do, of course, when the crew you pay to maintain the field messes up and salts the earth like conquering forces.

ESPN's Darren Rovell tweeted an aerial picture of the St. Edward High School football stadium in Elgin, Illinois—a former expanse of grass that groundskeepers accidentally dusted with weed killer.

Somewhere, Harvey Updyke is chuckling.

My favorite part about the picture is how it tells a tale.

You can see the groundskeeper realizing his mistake in real time. It's lane after lane of business as usual until the far side of the field.

St. Edward athletic director P.J. White told Gene Chamberlain of the Elgin Courier-News the field-nuking was just a simple goof-up.

"It was an honest mistake made in the mixing of chemicals for the field and [the groundskeepers] feel terrible about it," White said. "Someone grabbed the wrong bottle when they were mixing chemicals."

St. Edward may play Friday's game against Immaculate Conception at Plunkett Park in Elmhurst.

Suck up that pride and call in the sod, guys.
