WWE SmackDown Spoilers: Complete Results and Analysis for September 17

Erik BeastonSep 15, 2015

Tuesday night's SmackDown tapings may have featured the "Bellabration" in honor of Nikki Bella's historic Divas Championship reign, but inside the squared circle, the top stars in sports entertainment waged war just days ahead of Night of Champions.

WWE world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins teamed with Money in the Bank winner Sheamus to battle Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns in the main event. With his mind on both Sting and John Cena, and the possibility of his tag team partner betraying him and cashing in his guaranteed title shot, The Architect had his plate full.

Would he come through as he has so many times in the past, or would the pressure on him prove too much, continuing what has been a miserable week to this point?

The New Day successfully retained their WWE tag team titles by defeating The Prime Time Players on Monday night but quickly found themselves the object of The Dudley Boyz's championship aspirations. What would Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods have in store for their No. 1 contenders? More importantly, would there be a table set exclusively for them, courtesy of Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley?

The WWE Divas were in action, Kevin Owens attempted to garner more momentum for himself ahead of this weekend's intercontinental title match and Big Show battled Cesaro to round out an eventful episode of SmackDown.

Analysis

One of the great aspects of the build to Night of Champions that has not been covered nearly enough is the subtle involvement of Sheamus on the fringe of the main event scene. He has continually popped up throughout the build to Rollins' two title defenses against Sting and Cena, and by teaming him with The Architect, WWE Creative has kept the teasing of a potential Money in the Bank cash-in alive.

Teaming them up against Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose is not only a great way to sell the tension between the heels, it also showcases Reigns and Ambrose ahead of their match with The Wyatt Family Sunday night. Most of all, it provides the show with a quality tag team main event.

Kevin Owens' victory over Dolph Ziggler is another case of a match providing fans with some solid wrestling while putting heat on another program. The absence of Ryback as he prepares to battle Owens is surprising, but the fact that the No. 1 contender defeated someone with the credibility of Ziggler will put the proper heat on the championship encounter.

From the continuation of the feud between Team PCB and Team BAD to the latest chapter in the rivalry between The New Day and The Dudley Boyz, the show looks to be a suitable penultimate stop on the road to this weekend's pay-per-view.
