EA Sports' annual FIFA ratings usually cause a stir in the football world, and this year is no different.

Along with the presumptions that Theo Walcott is the fastest player on the planet and that David De Gea is better than Thibaut Courtois, perhaps the most surprising revelation is the appraisal of Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker's skills.

The Gunners' BFG (Big Friendly Giant, right?) achieves a staggering 88 defensive rating, making him not just the best defender in the Premier League but also better than defensive giants Sergio Ramos, Jerome Boateng and Philipp Lahm.

When you consider Mertesacker's unavoidably low pace stats, it makes you wonder how high his other numbers must be.

It's worth noting, though, for as high as Mertesacker's defensive rating is, the likes of Lahm, John Terry, etc., are still rated higher than Arsenal's lanky defender in the overall ratings
