4 Most Frustrating Things About Being a Borussia Dortmund Fan Right Now

Stefan BienkowskiSep 15, 2015

Things are going pretty well for Borussia Dortmund right now. They are top of the Bundesliga table, haven't dropped a single point and have a new manager who seems to have walked in to the club and found success almost instantly.

However, that's not to say that some things don't still get under the skin of Dortmund fans from time to time.

Like any other football club, Dortmund are far from perfect, and although they may be in a spot of great form, frustration is only just around the corner.

Here are the top four things just waiting to bother Dortmund fans down the road, if not already beginning to upset them right now.

No Champions League Football

1 of 4

We kick off today's list with perhaps the most obvious downside to this current season for Dortmund: no Champions League football.

Although most of the BVB support will just be happy to have remained in the top division after last season's troubles, there will undoubtedly be a sense of frustration at what could have been when the famous anthem begins blurting out of televisions across the country.

Dortmund are a club that belong in the premier European competition and may well be back among the best next season, but for now they'll have to put up with Europa League opponents and enjoy the competition from a notable distance.

Ilkay Gundogan's Inevitable Departure

Although all seems calm at Dortmund now that Thomas Tuchel has came in to the club and very quickly established his rule over the side, there are still a few things bubbling under the surface.

Perhaps the most notable one that Dortmund fans will be aware of is the situation regarding Ilkay Gundogan and his future at the club.

The central midfielder extended his contract until 2017 this summer, but many consider Gundogan's ultimate goal to be a move away from the club when, or even before, his current deal expires. We will wait to see how this one plays out, but it's certainly a sticking point for many fans of the club.

Marco Reus' Continuous Injuries

3 of 4

Marco Reus is a player who brings so much delight, joy and ultimately success to the choir of applauding Dortmund fans around the Westfalenstadion every other week, yet there is one aspect of the German forward that continuously frustrates Dortmund fans.

We are, of course, talking about the countless, repetitive injuries that Reus picks up from one season to the next. Most fans will be aware of the lengthy one that kept the Germany international out of last summer's World Cup, but for most Dortmund fans that's only the tip of the iceberg.

According to Transfermarkt, Reus has had no less than 15 injuries over the course of the past three seasons. An incredible amount of misfortune that has undoubtedly held Dortmund back at points over the course of his time at the club.

Bayern Munich

4 of 4

Life would be so much easier for Dortmund fans if Bayern Munich simply didn't exist. Not only would each and every season propose an enticing shot at the league title without any regular, compromising opponents, but it would also mean the Westfalenstadion side would be the biggest club in Germany.

Yet, aside from the envious looks toward Bayern's trophy cabinet, there is the constant fear at the back of every Dortmund fan's mind that the Bavarian giants could swoop in for any of the squad's best players without a moment's notice.

Gundogan, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, even Reus—nobody seems to be safe while Bayern and their riches are running amok in the Bundesliga. And that frustrates Dortmund fans more than anything.
