Mike Pettine Comments on Johnny Manziel's Status as Starter Entering Week 2

Timothy RappSep 14, 2015

Johnny Manziel might just get an encore.

The Cleveland Browns' backup quarterback was forced into action in Week 1 against the New York Jets after Josh McCown left the game with a concussion, and head coach Mike Pettine said the team will prepare for next week's game against the Tennessee Titans with Manziel as the starter, per Mary Kay Cabot of Northeast Ohio Media Group.

That doesn't guarantee that Manziel will get the start, however, as McCown might still get the nod if he clears concussion protocol and is able to practice on Thursday or Friday. Pettine said he would make that decision later in the week, per Cabot.

Manziel, 22, struggled against the Jets, finishing 13-of-24 for 182 yards with a touchdown and three turnovers (all in the second half). He was also sacked three times and seemed flustered by New York's pressure, fleeing the pocket frequently and looking to make a play with his legs rather than find a receiver down the field.

Manziel especially struggled on his shorter throws, per Rich Cimini of ESPN:

The second half in particular was rough for Johnny Football.

"Obviously I'm a little bit disappointed in the second half but there were still some good things despite the turnovers," Manziel said of his performance, per Cabot.

There will need to be even more good things for Manziel in Week 2 if he gets the start.

While a matchup against the Titans is a winnable contest, Marcus Mariota shone in his debut, and the team won't be a pushover. Manziel will need to play far better if he starts, if Cleveland is to avoid an 0-2 opening to the season.
