Khiry Robinson Investigated for Striking Saints Intern: Latest Details, Reaction

Tyler ConwaySep 14, 2015

The NFLPA is investigating an incident in which the NFL may have improperly interviewed New Orleans Saints running back Khiry Robinson regarding a fine the team administered during training camp.

According to a report by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Robinson was fined by the team after allegedly striking an intern during an altercation:

"

Robinson was not arrested or charged for the incident, which arose from a dispute regarding the agreed fee to be paid by Robinson and another player to the intern for driving them from The Greenbrier to a local store so that they could get their phones fixed. The other player paid the fee; Robinson apparently declined because his phone wasn’t actually fixed.

The problem arises in the way the NFL handled the case. New Orleans officials reported Robinson's fine to the league office, at which point an investigation was launched into the incident. As part of the NFL's review, however, it interviewed Robinson without an NFLPA representative present—a violation of the league's collective bargaining agreement.

An additional interview was conducted with a union rep present a day after the initial sit-down.

ESPN.com's Mike Triplett, who confirmed the investigation, attempted to speak with the NFL and the Saints but did not receive a comment. The NFLPA is also yet to issue a statement on the matter.

While Robinson and the Saints appear to have moved on, the NFL's handling of the case will do little to help its relationship with the players. Having a union rep available for investigations is a basic tenant of the CBA, so expect the NFLPA to do its best to ensure incidents like this never happen again.
