Jets Tried to Acquire Cousins

Sunday, Sept. 13

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported hours before Washington's season opener that another quarterback-needy team inquired about Cousins:

Rapoport added that the Jets made other calls, not just limited to Cousins, but that Washington didn't discuss trading the 27-year-old.

The quarterback situations in New York and Washington are a mess. The Jets lost Geno Smith to a broken jaw in a dispute with former teammate IK Enemkpali. Veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick will be leading the offense to start the season.

Washington head coach Jay Gruden named Cousins the starting quarterback on August 31. Robert Griffin III, who was long assumed to be the starter, suffered a concussion during a preseason game on August 20.

"When it's all said and done, after all the film we've gone through, after all the offseason activity, all the training camp footage, we feel like at this time, Kirk Cousins gives us the best chance to win and that's where we're going," Gruden said, per Kevin Patra of NFL.com on Sept. 10. "It's Kirk's team."

Griffin has since been cleared after going through the NFL's concussion protocol, but Gruden hasn't wavered in his stance that Cousins is the starter.

Given how steadfast Washington has been in not dealing Cousins over the last four years, this is his team, and it will sink or swim on his arm. The best thing that can happen to him and the Redskins is playing games to get away from all the off-field discussions.
